Dreaming of the Beach

At the Christian Teachers Association of British Columbia (CTABC) convention in October, (the one where students get two days off before Thanksgiving and the teachers all go to school), CTABC made an exciting announcement.

They were changing their name to Christian Educators of British Columbia (CEBC), which better represented the many people who work to educate each child in each classroom.

I teach grade one and the 21 students in our classroom community are supported by 7 learning support individuals, 1 French teacher, 1 library teacher, 1 music teacher, 3 administrators, and 2 administrative assistants. A lot of people are working together to educate your children.

What do you really see?

A few months later, Tricia Stobbe, CEBC’s executive director, came to an elementary staff meeting to share about the new and exciting things they are working on. She started by showing us the new logo for CEBC.

She asked us what we, as Christian educators, thought it looked like. Some of us saw a book, others a Bible, and even others a pencil. Tricia affirmed all of those comments with a nod. She explained why they choose those items and what they represented.

Out of left field

Tricia then surprised us all by saying,When I asked the staff at Agassiz Christian School the same question, one of them said, ‘a bikini.’” We had a good laugh at the ridiculousness of somebody referring to the Christian Educators of BC icon as a bikini!

Now, I live in Agassiz. I know the staff at Agassiz Christian School. And one of them is my husband.

I made a quick list in my mind of all the people who might have compared the CEBC icon to a bikini. My husband was on the list. A few ACS staff put two-and-two together and joked that it might have been him.

So, when I got home that night, I casually said, “Tricia Stobbe came to our school today and asked us what we thought the new CEBC logo was….”

He looked at me with a mischievous grin and started to laugh. He knew exactly where this conversation was going…straight to the beach.
